Here's the simple version of how to handle it in the Ocala area, whether you do it yourself or have it hauled.
First: disconnect and drain it (or have a pro do it)

Before pickup, the old unit needs to be shut off, drained, and disconnected. If you're not comfortable with the gas or electric connection, a plumber or handyman can do it quickly.
- Electric: switch off the breaker before touching anything.
- Gas: shut off the gas supply valve and disconnect the line.
- Drain it: connect a hose to the drain valve and empty the tank so it isn't heavy or sloshing when it's moved.
- Once it's disconnected and drained, just set it outside — garage, carport, driveway, or curb.

You can self-haul it to a local scrap yard or a Marion County solid-waste facility — check current locations, hours, and any fees on the official Marion County Solid Waste page.
