Estate Cleanout Checklist for The Villages & Ocala Families
June 9, 2026 · 6 min read · Bingo Pickup
Clearing a loved one's home is one of the hardest jobs a family ever takes on — equal parts logistics and grief. This checklist is meant to make the practical side a little lighter so you can focus on what matters. Go at your own pace; there's no prize for rushing.
Before you move anything
- Secure the important documents — wills, deeds, titles, insurance policies, tax records, and financial statements. Check desks, safes, freezers, and taped under drawers.
- Set aside valuables and sentimental items — jewelry, photos, military medals, heirlooms. These hide in unexpected places, so go slowly.
- Don't toss mail or paperwork unread — it can reveal accounts, subscriptions, and bills that need closing.
- Photograph rooms before clearing — helpful for family members who can't be there and for any estate-sale appraiser.
The five-pile sort
- Keep — what family members want. Tag it or move it to one room.
- Distribute — items promised to specific relatives.
- Sell — for an estate sale, auction, or consignment (an appraiser can flag what's worth money before anything leaves).
- Donate — usable furniture, clothing, housewares.
- Haul away — the worn, broken, and unwanted. This is almost always the biggest pile, and it's where we come in.
A realistic timeline
For a typical home, families spend a week or two on the sentimental sort, hold an estate sale or donation pickup, and then clear whatever remains. You don't have to have it spotless before we arrive — we handle the leftover furniture, mattresses, appliances, and general contents in one or two truckloads.
How we help with the haul
We quote whole-home estate cleanouts from your photos by truckload, work respectfully and discreetly, and only charge after the job is complete. Many families have us come twice — once for the bulk after the estate sale, and once for the final sweep. See our cleanouts page for how it works, or request a quote when you're ready.
We handle estate cleanouts throughout The Villages, Ocala, Summerfield, and Gainesville. If it helps to talk it through first, call us at 850-321-3047 — no pressure.
