Here's how to get that old spa off your patio without throwing out your back.
Why hot tubs are so hard to remove
- Weight — even drained, the shell, cabinet, and insulating foam are brutally heavy and awkward.
- It's plumbed and wired — pumps, heaters, and a 240V connection have to be safely disconnected first.
- It won't fit through gates — most spas have to be cut into sections to get out of a screened lanai or fenced yard.
- Nobody takes them whole — landfills and bulk programs won't accept an intact hot tub.
Your options
- Sell or give it away — only realistic if it still runs. A dead spa has no buyers.
- DIY demolition — doable with a reciprocating saw, a strong helper, and a free weekend, but messy and heavy. Disconnect the power at the breaker first.
